Golden delicious

My last weekend at the Seaport Farmers’ Market in Halifax and it was raining. I had to put on my Wellies and brave it. It seems that although locals aren’t deterred by the cold, they certainly are discouraged by the rain. The result was a very quiet day on the Halifax waterfront.

Although I already had a coffee in hand, I could not pass up on cider samples from Noggins Corner Farm. Nothing better than a little bubbly on the weekend. In addition to a fine selection of alcoholic ciders the farm also makes fantastic apple juice and a variety of fruit vinegars. Apple cider vinegar, which I’ve started having in warm water thirty minutes before breakfast every morning has a wide range of health benefits.

I stopped drinking warm water with fresh squeezed lemon juice in the mornings, which has some of the same health benefits as apple cider vinegar, simply because they weren’t all that fresh. Although it was easy to find decently priced lemons grown within Europe all year round, since I’ve moved back to Canada I no longer have that luxury. I just can’t bring myself to spend a dollar on a lemon that has travelled all the way from South Africa. So, I switched to apple cider vinegar as part of my morning regime. I’ve always had apple cider vinegar on hand because I knew it was better for you than other vinegars, but I had no idea how beneficial it was until I started to do some more reading. Here is a long list of its healing properties: lowers blood pressure, helps to maintain a healthy weight, reduces insomnia, acne and muscle pain, increases energy, aids digestion, prevents acid reflex, and is good for diabetics. If you suffer from any of these ailments I would recommend trying to incorporate one spoonful of the magic vinegar into your diet at least once a day. If you decide to drink it in warm water be sure to do so 20-30 mins before eating anything. If you aren’t a morning person then try it in the evening before dinner. I personally don’t mind the slightly sour taste, but if its too strong then I would suggest mixing it with a little honey to sweeten it up a bit.

Eat them fresh as a snack, bake them in a pie or a crumble (you may want to save these goodies only for special occasions. I’m thankful that I’m one of the few who actually detests apples cooked in desserts), puree them for apple sauce, juice them and ferment them, but whatever you do make sure you eat one everyday! After all we all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away!

I remember my mum made me drink apple vinegar when I was a kid, the taste was utterly awful even with tons of honey. I think I’m going to give it another try given the health benefits.
